About Earl Grey Snail

Earl Grey takes its name from Charles Grey, British prime minister in the 1830s. How the tea reached him is told in several ways — a gift from a Chinese diplomat, a blend made to suit the water at his estate — and the stories have grown with the tea. What has stayed constant is the bergamot.

An afternoon classic — Earl Grey is traditionally served black or with a slice of lemon.

The bergamot: Citrus bergamia

Grown for its peel — a sour citrus from a narrow strip of the Calabrian coast, cultivated almost entirely for the oil pressed from its rind.
Cold-pressed from the rind — the oil comes from the peel, not the flesh, which is why the aroma is bright and resinous.

The leaf

Golden Snail — a Chinese black tea rolled by hand into tight spirals.
Golden tips — the gold flecks are unopened leaf buds, the youngest growth on the bush and the finest part of the leaf.
